Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I)

Student Electronics Technician - SET

The nation’s high schools have provided basic electronics courses for several decades. Successful passage of the course results in a notation on the student’s transcript.  It has been rare since the 1960’s for high school students to gain NEA, ISCET or ETA certification as a credential useful in gaining employment.  A reason for the lack of success is fundamental. High school courses rarely can devote the needed school hours for complete basic electronics understanding.  After years of evaluation and extensive research, ETA International has developed a high school level certification that reflects student electronics competence based on the abbreviated number of contact hours high school students receive.

Associate Certified Electronics Technician - CETa

Assesses knowledge and abilities of entry-level electronics technicians. Covers basics of electronics such as soldering; color code; safety; test equipment; component identification and theory; basic circuits - AC, DC and digital; radio, antennas and wave propagation; block diagrams and schematic usage; basic mathematics and formulas; computer literacy; audio/video/data signal processing; amplification; semiconductors and integrated circuits.

CERTIFIED ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN -CET*

Certified Electronics Technician - Consumer Electronics

Requires at least two years of school and/or work experience. Specialty examination for CSM requires an understanding of consumer electronic products theory or operation. Troubleshooting techniques and use of specialized test equipment required in consumer electronics repair shops. TV, VCR, radio, CDs, antennas, sound systems, and portable electronics products are included in the knowledge testing.

Certified Electronics Technician - Biomedical

Requires at least two years of school and/or work experience in the field. Must have a thorough understanding of the healthcare electronics products used in the medical field. Emphasis is on patient safety, electrical fault detection, record-keeping, monitoring equipment and specification for connection to patients, use of defibrillators and x-ray equipment.

Certified Electronics Technician - Computer Service Technician

The CET with CST specialty is tested on his or her knowledge of computer keyboard usage and ability to troubleshoot for hardware and software problems encountered by computer users. The technician is expected to be able to detect and eradicate viruses; to set up new computers and replace defective sections or components. He or she must be able to properly configure peripheral equipment; to resolve hardware and software conflicts; to understand file systems and to be proficient with word processors, graphics and spreadsheet programs and to utilize utility assistants. A CST also has a basic understanding and ability to troubleshot printers, monitors, modems and other common computer connected equipment.

Certified Electronics Technician - Avionics

Avionics CETs require knowledge of aircraft and ground electronic equipment use in communications, direction finding, identification, altitude measurement, and aircraft control. Special emphasis is placed on no-fault installation of equipment and wiring within the aircraft including specific rules for wiring and cable security and ability of equipment to withstand vibration and mechanical shock. Both transmitter and receiver theory and familiarity as well as antenna knowledge is required.

Certified Electronics Technician - Certified Network Computer Technician

The CNCT is required to have all of the abilities and knowledge of the CST or Computer Service Technician, but also must be adept in the computer networking  and internet usage areas. He or she is particularly adept at recognizing and resolving network problems and understanding the architecture and protocols used in the interconnection of computers and network systems.

Certified Network Systems Technician - CNST

A CNST has been educated in computer networking skills. He must understand the relationship between the various levels of the networking model. In addition to being able to configure an entire system regardless of the interconnection system, he or she can design a system from scratch and procure compatible equipment. He or she can calculate the wiring requirements whether they be copper, coax or fiber. The CNST understands the programming requirements and can troubleshoot both network, software and hardware problems.

Certified Electronics Technician - Audio/Video Distribution

The CET with AVD specialty is adept at installing and troubleshooting electronics products which provide audio and video communications or entertainment. To obtain this specialty CET, ability to repair equipment internally is not required. Ability to interconnect sound systems; wireless speakers; DVDs and satellite systems is required. Knowledge of the methods and equipment used in antennas an in signal distribution systems and methods of installing pre-wiring or retro-fit wiring and the use of pre-and line amplifiers and associate equipment is included. Home Theater and Smart House wiring technicians fit this category.

Certified Electronics Technician - Satellite Installer

The CSI - Certified Satellite Installer - is knowledgeable in the installation, programming and troubleshooting of satellite systems. Knowledge of C and Ku Band equipment is expected as well as a basic understanding of two-way Internet transceivers. The CSI also is capable of installing and servicing antenna equipment and basic distribution wiring. Also understands conflicts between interconnected equipment and ways to reduce or eliminate interference.
